Summary

The Director of the WVSU Economic Development Center (EDC) is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for the center and its programs located on the West Side of Charleston, WV.  WVSU EDC was designed to support creative entrepreneurs and is a resource to the community, providing business incubation services and co-working space for tenants. The Director will envision, develop and implement a robust portfolio of programs and partnerships to support the EDC’s mission. This position is employed by the West Virginia State University Research and Development Corporation.

 

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Oversees the day to day operation of the EDC, including marketing the facility, recruiting potential tenants, getting approval for tenants, and recruitment of experts to design and lead business development workshops.

Manage the facilities and create the infrastructure/operational processes needed to create a leading business incubator space attractive to creative and other entrepreneurs.
Proactively seek and identify appropriate extramural funding for EDC programs. Respond to eligible grant proposals and ensure effective record keeping relative to grant funds.
·       Direct and coordinate individual budgets inclusive of monitoring of grant funds obtained and expended and meeting any requisite reporting requirements.

Recruit clients (tenants) to utilize WVSU’s EDC.
Provide excellent customer service to the EDC tenants; conducts annual assessment to ensure incubator is meeting current targeted client needs.
Provide continued strategic guidance to entrepreneurs in areas such as business modeling, sales, and marketing, financial, fundraising, overall strategy, operations, etc.
Serves as “public face of the WVSU EDC”; makes presentations to interested parties and networks to get press coverage for the EDC in collaboration with WVSU’s communications team.
Work in collaboration with University faculty and administrators in business, marketing and communications to develop and implement workshops and provide opportunities for faculty professional development and student success
Works with community stakeholders and advances community partnerships on behalf of the EDC to stimulate economic development.
Assists in coordinating facility operations with University maintenance, custodial and public safety staff.
Oversee the end to end delivery of incubator program activities and events, ensuring that stakeholder requirements and program milestones are met.
Ensure collection of all required programmatic and civil rights compliance data
Collaborate with WVSU Extension personnel, as well as local, state, and federal agencies, in order to expanded program resources.
·       Conduct activities to foster a positive public image of West Virginia State University Extension, the West Virginia State University Research and Development Corporation, and West Virginia State University, an 1890 Land-Grant Institution.

·       Share leadership in Extension’s commitment to employ from and program for the diversity represented in West Virginia’s population.

Other Requirements

Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree required in business, engineering, technology, entrepreneurial studies or marketing. Master’s degree preferred. • Minimum 5 years’ experience in managing a start-up business or providing services as a business consultant to start up business through all stages, initial funding through to launch. • At least 4 years’ experience working with entrepreneurs, start-ups, learning/tinkering labs, incubator or incubation consultancy or experience in maker spaces and creative economy projects.

Travel Requirements

Some travel in Kanawha and surrounding counties can be expected.
