Position Description

The Department of Agricultural, Leadership and Community Education seeks a scholar in leadership and social change with contextual application in agriculture and food systems. The position is a tenure-track, academic-year appointment with primary responsibility in teaching and secondary responsibility in research. The faculty hire is expected to advance a contemporary curriculum in leadership studies appropriate in formal and non-formal educational settings, while also developing a research program supported by interdisciplinary grants related to leadership in the context of agriculture and food systems.  Additionally, this faculty hire is expected to make scholarly contributions that align with existing and emerging departmental priorities, including adaptive leadership for social change, assessment of leadership behaviors in innovation adoption, capacity building for organizational leadership within sociotechnical systems, human/community-centered engagement, and leader development across the lifespan.

Teaching Appointment: The teaching responsibilities include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level (typically four courses per year). Specific courses will depend on the specific area of expertise of the successful candidate but may include leadership education philosophy, strategies, and effective assessment methods. New courses supporting advanced study in areas such as adaptive leadership, organizational leadership or leadership and sustainability would be encouraged.

Research Appointment: The research responsibilities focus on engaged research, providing the expertise to address adaptive challenges at the intersection of discovery and implementation in social systems. The successful candidate will support the mission of the land-grant institution through research, scholarship, and practice with complex issues related to the adoption of innovative agriculture and food systems technologies by Commonwealth producers, government entities, businesses, and communities, with potential for collaborations with Cooperative Extension. Successful candidates will be expected to identify funding from sources that may include the Department of Education, Department of Labor, and Department of Agriculture. This position is part of the CALS SmartFarm Innovation Network Initiative and aligns with the Data and Decisions and Equity and Social Disparity for the Human condition destination areas of Virginia Tech. Collaborations with faculty and graduate students on the main campus in Blacksburg and with Agricultural Research and Extension Centers located across the Commonwealth are expected. Global engagement is important as the incumbent’s career advances, and will contribute to the expansion of Virginia Tech’s reputation in this domain.

Required Qualifications

● Doctorate degree (current or anticipated) in a discipline related to Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education (including programs associated with organizational development). Completion of Ph.D. is required by the start date of employment. ● Coursework/experience in agriculture and food systems and/or Extension. ● Proven skills in effective oral and written communication appropriate for diverse audiences. ● Experience with interdisciplinary research and outreach programming.

Preferred Qualifications

● Coursework and/or experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in leadership or leadership education. ● Experience procuring grants or other external funding for research and/or programmatic support. ● Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative behavioral research and/or evaluation methods. ● Record of peer-reviewed publications.
