Job Description

 

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track academic faculty position as the Teaching Assistant Professor, Equine Science. The position will be located in Clark County, Las Vegas, Nevada.

 

The Teaching Assistant Professor, Equine Science use expert knowledge of horses to teach and/or mentor others in equine programs in a variety of settings and share knowledge of horse behavior, nutrition, health and training to novices who have no experience with horses to those who are very experienced with horses. The position will develop equine science curricula, work with 4-H horse clubs/program, work with private citizens and other groups. The position will also develop educational programs, evaluate participants and programs and help students’ or members’ familiarity with horses grow into career options or workforce opportunities.

 

This ideal candidate will also assist in policy making for horse owners and use of horses in an urban environment and could encompass a broader range of studies related to horses in agricultural contexts, including horse reproduction and breeding, horse diets, and healthy environments for horses.

 

The position will be funded for 3 years and renewable based on performance and availability of funds.

Required Qualifications

 

PhD in Equine Science or related discipline.

 

Demonstrated experience in the equine industry, including equine farm management, animal comfort, and well-being, and knowledge about maintaining a safe working environment around horses.

 

Demonstrated commitment to the principles and strength of diversity in people and programs as indicated by an ability to effectively relate to diverse backgrounds, including an understanding and respect for cultural, ethnic, and individual differences.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Experience in population-based programming in urban community settings.

 

Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation.

 

Experience in assessing and determining community needs.

 

Experience in supervision of staff, managing budgets, and various administrative duties.

 

Experience in developing relationships and partnerships with a variety of community groups.

 

Experience in seeking extramural funding to support program efforts

 

Certification and Licensure

 

Valid Nevada State Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within six months

 

Successful fingerprinting / background check
