Associate/Full Professor of Agricultural Economics

Position Overview:
The salary range for this position is $128,800 – $232,100 (annual). “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay resulting in a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Associate/Full Professor of Agricultural Economics. This is an academic year (9-month), tenured Associate/Full Professor position with a 20% Instruction and Research (I&R), and 80% Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) appointment.

The appointee is expected to establish an outreach and research program in agricultural economics, with a focus on the issues facing California’s farm economy. The appointee will bolster our applied research footprint across the state and help meet the needs of California’s agricultural sector through applied research on agricultural production costs and returns, farm-level costs and impacts of regulation, and of management strategies that strengthen profitability and long-run economic viability. The successful candidate is expected to oversee UC Davis ARE’s world-renowned Cost and Return studies program (https://coststudies.ucdavis.edu). This will involve supervising research staff, engaging with funders and external stakeholders, as well as maintaining an extramural granting program to support core programmatic activities and methodological improvements. Teaching responsibilities will consist of one to one-and-a-half quarter-long courses per year. The courses to be taught by the appointee will be set by the department chair based upon departmental needs and the successful candidate’s interests/expertise. The appointee’s primary teaching responsibilities are likely to include ARE 120 Agricultural Policy, ARE 138 International Commodity & Resource Markets, 139 Futures & Options Markets, and/or ARE 155 Operations Research & Management Science. Other courses that the appointee may be asked to teach include MS level courses in agricultural economics and finance (ARE 223, ARE 271), and PhD level courses in empirical methods (ARE 202B, ARE 202C), and agricultural economics (ARE 231, ARE 232, and ARE 233). Other responsibilities include student advising at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and training/mentoring graduate students. Performance of departmental and university service at the level commensurate with a tenured faculty member is expected.

This recruitment is being conducted at the Associate/Full rank. The resulting hire will be at the Associate or Full rank depending on the proposed appointee’s qualifications.

This position will be recruited at the Associate or Full Professor rank. This is a tenured academic year (9-month) position.

Availability of Space and Resources

Office space will be provided by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the Social Sciences and Humanities building on the UC Davis central campus. Faculty share administrative, accounting, and clerical staff. Ongoing instruction and research support is provided by a departmental computer facility, consisting of a local area network and centralized computing system, which augments the usual PC or Macintosh computing capabilities. Permanent Programmer/Analyst staff provides on-site assistance for most computing needs. Clerical support staff provides routine administrative services. Teaching Assistants and Readers are assigned to instructors with large-enrollment classes.

It is current department policy to provide a base level of support allocation to each faculty member, which funds routine annual expenses deemed necessary to support the position.

Start-up funding will be provided based on the programmatic needs of the successful candidate.
