Position Description

Leadership
Provide vision and leadership for the UAF Cooperative Extension Service (CES), directing the CES unit, developing procedures and managing the budget in coordination with IANRE leadership. Responsible for ensuring that the CES unit has multiple operations, programs and projects that reflect the mission of UAF, IANRE, NIFA and Alaskan communities.

Coordinate the CES program area leads in developing activities and outreach that align with UAF Cooperative Extension’s overall mission and vision. Work with UAF administration and IANRE director to ensure faculty workloads and expectations and unit criteria are aligned with these goals and work is communicated to UAF, state, and national entities.

Work closely with IANRE Reporting Specialist to ensure federal reporting mandates, audits and parity analysis are completed accurately and on time.

Set direction and procedures for the CES unit. Interpret and apply applicable procedures and regulations from UAF, IANRE, and NIFA to CES faculty and staff.

Respond to requests for information from external constituencies, including deciphering requests and identifying appropriate personnel to respond to them.

Recommend and create new programs as dictated by identified community needs, develop processes and participate in the planning and budgeting process.

Represent UAF Cooperative Extension at the national level through organizational meetings both in person and remotely.

External Relationships
Foster statewide relationships with local governments and elected officials as well as with the private sector, non-profits, and the public. Develop community partnerships to leverage the work of Cooperative Extension and facilitate funding and outreach opportunities for Alaska.

Supervision
Supervise statewide CES professionals; facilitate in-service training and development for all levels of professionals in CES in Alaska; oversee orientation for new faculty and staff working with CES programs; conduct performance evaluations and make recommendations about personnel actions; develop performance metrics and accountability measures and ensure those are linked to priority goals, staffing, decisions, program strategies and budgets.

Develop and maintain effective teamwork among employees, volunteers and partner agencies.

Strategic Funding
Identify financial needs and write grants to secure funding. Work with external organizations and agencies to negotiate partnerships, agreements and contracts. Create reports or prepare documents with regard to national extension trends and local community needs for consideration of impacts to funding or strategic planning.

Identify funding and partnership opportunities to support CES and IANRE strategic plans.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in human development, education, agriculture, business, extension or related field and seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in University Cooperative Extension Service Experience in leadership of groups across diverse cultural and geographic settings, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Master's degree preferred.

The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Extension (IANRE) is seeking a dynamic person to lead Cooperative Extension Services (CES) in Alaska. This person will provide leadership, coordination, and oversight of all Extension programming, evaluation, and reporting statewide. This position will be responsible for setting the vision for Extension in Alaska and directing CES in collaboration with the IANRE Director and leadership. Coordination of CES program area leads to develop activities and outreach that align and reflect the mission of UAF, IANRE, NIFA and Alaskan communities will be paramount. Acting as a national representative for CES both in-person and remotely will be required.
