Position Description

Poultry Extension Educator

 

The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking a Poultry Extension Educator trained in poultry science to join our nationally recognized Penn State Extension Poultry Team. The individual will be responsible for working with the team to identify important poultry industry issues, formulate learning objectives, develop educational events and materials to support these objectives, and participate in evaluations to measure the team’s educational impact. It is expected that competitive candidates will have:

 

• A general understanding of various poultry management practices as well as animal handling and welfare practices.

 

• The ability to deliver educational programming to small flock producers.

 

• A general understanding of avian biology, husbandry, nutrition, poultry ventilation and building systems, nutrient management principles, and advanced poultry production practices. Experience in general flock management, precision technologies, disease diagnosis, and biosecurity are favorable attributes.

 

• Possess skills for excellent teaching, program development, impact evaluation, and grant management.

 

• The ability to work closely with university-based research faculty to develop and conduct applied research relevant to clientele needs.

 

• The ability to participate in existing efforts to reduce disease spread within poultry flocks and increase biosecurity practices throughout the commonwealth.

 

• The ability to work effectively on a team and with diverse populations and audiences.

 

The successful candidate will:

 

• Develop and/or participate in interdisciplinary collaborations across institutions.

 

• Create a diverse external funding portfolio (e.g., grants, contracts, cost recovery, development) in support of the team’s programs.

 

• Develop original content to engage audiences through innovative educational methods such as webinars, videos, mobile apps, electronic publications, online courses, and traditional publications and in-person presentations.

 

Primary responsibilities will include planning, implementing, conducting, and evaluating a broad educational program focused on poultry management.

 

While the successful candidate will be based in Extension Area 7, they will be part of a state team and, thus, expected to participate and deliver programs statewide. The home base will be in Mifflin County (152 E Market St, Lewistown, PA 17044). Education and Experience Requirements:

 

This job will be filled as a level 3 or 4, depending on the successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience. The role of Extension Educator 4 typically requires a Master’s degree or higher, plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The role of Extension Educator 3 typically requires a Master’s degree or higher, plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with one or more degrees in animal science, poultry science, or related disciplines and work experience with multiple aspects of poultry management.

 

The candidate must:

 

• Demonstrate positive human relations and strong communication skills necessary to work effectively with team members, poultry producers, industry representatives, government officials, and the public.

 

• Have excellent verbal and written communications skills in English and valued in Spanish.

 

• Be proficient in applying computer software, possess a valid driver’s license, use a private automobile, and have the ability and desire to travel.

 

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
