Job Summary:

 

The Division of Extension and Engagement and the Extension Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Program invite applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Practice position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Extension Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources Program Leader, Animal & Rangeland Sciences Department Head, and Western Regional Director.

 

This Assistant Professor of Practice position is stationed in Dallas, Oregon and serves Lane, Linn, Benton, Polk, Marion, Yamhill, Washington, Clackamas, and Tillamook counties. Its academic home is the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University. Active contributions to scholarship are required (see the scholarship duties section, below, for details).

This position contributes to the mission of the College of Agricultural Sciences, with principal responsibility for needs assessment; Extension educational program development, delivery, and evaluation; and conducting applied research to support Extension activities.

 

This faculty position is responsible for the Forage/Livestock Extension programs in the assigned counties. This faculty member provides leadership in teaching, communication, and programming for the production of dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, and goats along with forage, rangeland, and natural resources for these livestock species using research-based information. This faculty member provides educational materials and programs and participate in statewide and regional activities through appropriate working groups in the College.

This position will require driving/traveling, among counties and other times throughout the state with occasional overnight stays and evening and weekend work as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

This individual ensures that educational programs and outreach activities serve diverse populations, including those that have been historically marginalized/excluded from participation.

 

75% – Extension Teaching and Related Assignmentsa. Extension Teaching

 

• Conduct on-going needs-assessment activities to determine the educational needs specific to this position’s audiences.

• Utilize Oregon State University’s six principles of teaching excellence that include audience consideration, planning, enhanced engagement, teaching, assessment, and reflection to provide a high level of non-credit teaching for extension audiences.

• Following a prioritized needs assessment, develop, design, and deliver Extension educational programming in dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, and goats and pasture management and forages related to these species of livestock production in the assigned counties.

• Some forage programming may include working with forage and grain commodity commissions/groups as appropriate and in partnership with Crops Faculty assigned to the area, with topics including forage seeding, grazing, weed control, riparian enhancement, and regulatory compliance.

• Design Extension non-credit programs that can be offered centrally or online to maximize client participation across Oregon and beyond.

• Explore and develop appropriate information and program delivery systems utilizing research results from disciplines associated with agriculture, education, marketing, community development and environmental management.

• Meet the information needs of local and regional audiences by accessing information from a variety of sources and disseminating it through appropriate mechanisms (internet, newsletter, newspaper, radio, television, presentations, etc.).

• Provide diverse educational experiences related to improvement of livestock and forage production systems by conducting area meetings, conferences, and tours, including topics on animal nutrition, health, breeding, herd improvement, grazing management, pasture species, soil fertility, and regulatory compliance.

• Utilize technology as a tool to increase the reach and impact of program delivery, including participating with Ask Extension.

• Conduct and coordinate local pesticide recertification efforts for stakeholders as well as answer any pesticide related questions from the public.

• Maintain Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License throughout employment to stay up-to-date with the science of pesticides and answer pesticide related questions.

• Respond to or refer routine phone, correspondence, and walk-in questions regarding livestock production, natural resource management, forages, and pasture management in designated counties.

 

b. Partnership/Collaboration/Networking

 

• Identify program needs and priorities by engaging dairy, beef, sheep, and goat producers. Collaborate with other researchers and Extension faculty and agencies to develop relevant science-based solutions to address prioritized challenges and opportunities.

• Use multiple methods of digital communication (i.e., web sites, online collaboration platforms, publications, video conferencing, and other online methods) to collaborate internally and externally as appropriate.

• Organize and maintain program advisory and management committees to help identify program needs, make recommendations, assist in program implementation, and evaluate program effectiveness.

• Pursue engagement opportunities that may include, but are not limited to the creation of internal and external partnerships, identification of community and educational needs, etc.

 

c. Accountability

 

• Develop annual plans of work that address educational needs as well as evaluate the quality and impact of Extension educational and research programs.

• Utilize appropriate and effective methods of communication to promote Extension programs and market Extension across Oregon and nationally.

• Follow OSU and division brand guidelines, digital publishing standards and digital contact management data integrity practices for programmatic communications, marketing and engagement.

• Keep records and provide necessary reports to the Division’s Administration, the department and/or college, including plans of work, narrative reports, impact statements, statistical reports, and reports of accomplishments.

• Implement fee-based programming and cost-recovery practices to support and enhance program delivery.

• Provide community and statewide opinion leaders and decision makers relevant, science-based topical information when requested.

• Report outputs and outcomes to Extension regional directors and elected officials (where applicable) in the areas served.

• Participate in leadership training opportunities that build expertise around equity, inclusion, and diversity. Outputs and impacts of efforts to promote equity, inclusion, and diversity should be included in promotion dossiers.

• Travel/driving is required to provide Extension educational programming and services throughout the assigned counties.

 

10% Applied Research

 

• Collaborate with professional colleagues, industry members, and field representatives to develop and implement applied research programs in dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats, and forages.

• Individually and as part of teams, secure outside grants, and contracts and/or service fees to support and enhance position-appropriate educational and applied research programs and service activities. The faculty member will be expected to meet all reporting requirements of the funding sources, department, college, and university.

 

10% ScholarshipDiscover new knowledge and develop creative solutions and applications for problems related to aspects of dairy and/or beef cattle, sheep, goats or forage production, management, or use.

 

Scholarly and creative work is intellectual work whose significance is validated by peers and that is communicated. Emphasis in scholarship should be placed on outcomes that recognize activities as a professional practitioner in community settings as defined by the incumbent’s position description.

 

To achieve promotion, scholarship for this position must include peer reviewed materials that are durable and findable in the web environment. These are typically of the two types shown below but as our communication worlds change, other types of scholarship may fit these durability and findable criteria:

 

• Publications in peer‐reviewed journals which might encompass description and evaluation of novel community‐based professional practice or research application, program development and innovation, outcomes of innovative programs and/or services, definitive professional practice reviews, or case reports among others.

• Authorship of extension publications, local or regional “practice” publications, book chapters, other educational materials, and digital information delivery media if it is either peer reviewed before dissemination or if there is evidence of its adoption and use by peers.

• Review, edit, and update appropriate Extension publications that serve the needs of the clientele served.

• These durable, web-findable materials may be augmented by other forms of peer validation such as the following:

• Invited presentations, poster and podium presentations, and published abstracts and/or proceedings at state, regional and national levels, provided that evidence of peer validation is provided.

• Documented impact due to local or regional adoption of improved practices, methods, or programs.

• Secured competitive grants and contracts appropriate for the scope and focus of the faculty member’s position.

• Named inventor of a protected intellectual property in the faculty member’s field.

• Recognition as a professional practitioner in community settings as demonstrated by

• Honorary degrees

• Awards recognizing community, professional, and/or scientific achievements

• Fellowships in national professional and/or scientific organizations

• Requests to serve as a technical advisor to government agencies, industry, or professional groups

• Including diverse perspectives on a research team, particularly among co-principal investigators

5% Service

 

• Serve as a liaison to area organizations that serve the position’s target audiences. Examples are producer/rancher and other clientele meetings including but not limited to natural resources meetings, such as Soil and Water Conservation Districts, county weed groups.

• Participate in departmental and faculty meetings and committees, and serve on departmental, Extension, College and University committees that are consistent with the duties of this position. There is an expectation to balance service at multiple levels within the institution with service to the profession (e.g., professional societies).

• Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations such as American Society of Animal Science, American Dairy Science Association, Society for Range Management, American Forage and Grasslands Council, and National Association of County Ag Agents.

• Participate in professional development opportunities including in-service training, international volunteer technical consultancies, and active involvement in professional domestic and international societies and associations as appropriate.

• Service on local, state, regional, and national advisory committees, and task forces, as appropriate to position responsibilities. Participate in Extension range/dairy/livestock/forage working groups to help develop proposals that can attract extramural grant funds to support Extension programs.

• Assist in cohesive marketing of Extension locally, regionally, and statewide.

• Be involved in community service through cooperation with other agencies and organizations. Contribute to the common goals and needs of Extension.

 

What You Will Need

 

• Master’s degree in Animal Sciences, Rangeland Sciences, Dairy Sciences or a field closely related to the duties of the position. Degree must be completed by anticipated start date (summer 2024).

• Teaching and organizational skills that are appropriate for adult learners.

• Written and oral communication skills, including the effective use of mass media.

• General knowledge of computers, including proficiency with e-mail, social media, and blogs.

• Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of employment and maintain it throughout employment.

• Commitment to collaborative and respectful learning and working environments that are safe, inclusive, and welcoming.

• Ability to work as a team member with other professionals.

• Ability to lead groups and to plan, organize, evaluate, manage, and delegate details associated with program management.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and evidence of good time management skills.

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

 

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

 

What We Would Like You to Have

 

• Doctorate degree in Animal Sciences, Dairy Sciences, Crops (Forage) Sciences, Rangeland Sciences, or closely related field.

• One or more years’ experience with Extension or other informal education delivery methods.

• One or more publications in print that are geared to general audiences (e.g., newspaper or magazine articles), Extension audiences (e.g., Extension publications), and/or professional audiences (e.g., peer-reviewed or refereed publications).

• Demonstrated commitment to work with historically marginalized individuals/ populations.

• Demonstrated life experience, education, and/or training that broaden capacity to equalize the success or impact on underserved audiences.

• Ability to learn and adapt to using multiple forms of digital communication systems, including websites, email newsletters, social media, and other tools in a changing technological environment.

• Demonstrated ability to secure external funding support for educational and/or research programs.

• Ability to understand the role of program advisory committees.

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

• Position requires working with livestock, including large animals.

• Position requires transporting (lift, carry) equipment and materials up to 25 pounds.

• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.

• This position requires driving/traveling among assigned counties and other times throughout the state of Oregon, with occasional overnight stays and evening and weekend work as appropriate
