Position Description

NDSU Extension is seeking a dynamic and innovative Extension Gerontology Specialist to lead statewide efforts addressing the needs of older adults, caregivers, and communities across North Dakota.

The Extension Gerontology Specialist will provide visionary leadership and expertise in the development, delivery, and evaluation of research-based educational programs that address issues related to aging, caregiving, and community well-being. This individual will work collaboratively with Extension personnel, university colleagues, and external partners to improve the lives of older adults and those who support them.

The position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

Program Development and Delivery

Assess statewide needs related to aging, caregiving, and age-friendly community development.
Develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs and resources that address key issues in gerontology, including healthy aging, chronic disease prevention, dementia and caregiving support, financial security, housing options, social connectedness, and end-of-life planning.
Provide training, consultation, and technical assistance to Extension personnel and community partners.
Deliver presentations and workshops at state, regional, and national conferences.
Research and Scholarship

Engage in applied research that informs Extension programming and contributes to the field of gerontology.
Engage in applied research and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, Extension publications, and/or other relevant outlets.
Seek and secure external funding through grants and partnerships to support program development and delivery.
Other

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams within Extension, university departments, state agencies, health organizations, and nonprofits.
Foster partnerships with organizations focused on aging, caregiving, and public health to expand program reach and impact.
Assure compliance with equal opportunities policies.
Participate in professional development experiences offered by NDSU Extension and other entities as appropriate.
Read and abide by all the rules and regulations for faculty at NDSU as outlined in the NDSU Policy Manual.
Contribute to a positive work environment through cooperation, collaboration and teamwork with others by developing and maintaining good working relationships with co-workers, faculty, staff, employees, and clientele.
Participate in program planning and training efforts as required.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in gerontology, human development and family science, public health, social work, or a related field. Demonstrated knowledge of aging issues and experience working with or on behalf of older adults. Strong communication, presentation, and facilitation skills. Experience in program development, delivery, and evaluation. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse audiences and partners.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree in a related field. Experience with grant writing and securing external funding. Record of scholarly publications or Extension resource development. Knowledge of adult education principles and methods. Experience working within the Cooperative Extension System or a similar outreach-based organization.
