The main emphases of the Sheridan County Extension Agent position will be in the areas of Agriculture and 4-H/Youth Development. The agent also has secondary responsibility in the area of Family and Consumer Science and community development.
County Profile: Sheridan County is located in the extreme northeastern corner of Montana bordering North Dakota to the east and Canada to the north. The Extension office is located in Plentywood which is also the county seat. Sheridan County is a rural agricultural community whose top industry centers on the family farm and ranch. The land is mostly prairie, of which three-fourths is tillable. The soil is of glacial origin which provides a rich base for small grain production. According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture there were 458 farms with an average size of 2,323 acres. 1,041,794 out of the total county acres of 1,073,056 were in farms. Wheat, cattle, and pulse crops are the major agricultural products, with Sheridan County leading the state in durum wheat production. Sheridan County is also the leading pulse crop producing county in the US. The 4-H program has an enrollment of 100 youth in three clubs throughout the county, and 40 volunteer leaders. Oil production and development is also an important component of the local economy. Sheridan County has excellent health care and retirement facilities and is the location of a center for developmentally disabled adults. According to the 2010 Census, the population of Sheridan County is 3384 residents of whom 1734 live in Plentywood which also serves as the primary trade center for the county. K-12 education is available in Plentywood, Medicine Lake, and Westby. Sporting opportunities abound in Sheridan County with the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge, world class pheasant hunting, and numerous other recreational and sporting opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, implement and evaluate educational programs in agriculture, including dryland crop production, livestock production, farm and ranch financial management, noxious weed management, range management, pest management, and pesticide training.
Provide support, including leadership, planning and innovation to the 4-H youth development program. Coordinate the planning and delivery of leader education programs at the county level and in cooperation with neighboring agents at the regional level.
Provide programming and support as necessary in the areas of family and consumer sciences and community development.
Plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs in horticulture and home pest management.
Network closely with policy makers, producer groups, government agencies and others in order to assess needs and guide local program priorities.
Serve as an ex-officio member of various agency and community committees relating to agriculture, youth development, and community development.
Cooperate with other Extension staff, government agencies, and civic groups in implementing, maintaining, and evaluating a balanced interdisciplinary Extension program.
Involve local officials and community citizens in determining needs, identifying major issues, and assisting in presenting/facilitating programs in various communities in Sheridan County.
Utilize all available media sources, including electronic mail, the Internet, and other advancing technologies, to communicate with MSU Extension staff and others, and to disseminate information to county clientele.
Must possess or be able to obtain a Government Pesticide Applicator’s License and a Montana driver’s license, or have reliable means of transportation.
Comply with all Extension federal, state, university, and county reporting requirements.
Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies.
Position requires frequent night and weekend work, extensive reading, frequent travel throughout the counties, occasional travel throughout the state of Montana, and travel to and from programs with adult and youth participants. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Bachelor’s Degree. At least one degree or significant relevant work experience in agronomy, which may include dryland crop production, forage crop production, animal science, range management, farm/ranch management, horticulture or other closely related fields. Demonstrated ability to lead groups, plan, implement, facilitate, teach, and evaluate educational programs. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities. Computer literacy as demonstrated by evidence of computer use in program development, delivery and/or management. Experience helping diverse groups and individuals accomplish common goals.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Master’s Degree. Knowledge or experience in dryland crops production, livestock production, farm management, and weed and pest management. Knowledge or experience in 4-H or other youth related programs Facilitation and mediation experience or training. Training and/or experience in budget development and management.

A successful candidate without a Master’s degree will be required to complete their Master’s degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.
