Position Description

The focus of this position is to provide overall executive and strategic leadership for the 4-H Youth Development program. The successful candidate will provide leadership by working successfully with volunteers and clientele to identify and meet the needs of youth and adults in Flathead County. Other foci may include collaborations with peers in youth development or other Extension disciplines.

General Statement
This position is located in Flathead County

Located in Northwest Montana, Flathead County encompasses 3,262,720 acres or 5,098 square miles. Approximately 94% of the land mass is National or State Forest Land, Wilderness, Agricultural, and Corporate Timber Land, thus confining development to the remaining 6% of the area.

A short distance from any developed area is Glacier National Park, designated hiking areas, 2 ski resorts, 8 golf courses, Flathead Lake, and Hungry Horse Reservoir. With the abundance of recreational opportunities and aesthetic values, it is not hard to see why Flathead County is the among the fastest growing, and the 3rd most populated county in Montana.

There are 3 incorporated cities in the County. Kalispell, which is the largest, has a population of approximately 19,927. Two additional major municipalities include Whitefish, with a population of 6,357, and Columbia Falls, with a population of 4,688. There are also several small full service communities in Flathead County, which have been designated as Census Designated Places, which will also have population and housing info. Countywide, the population has increased from 74,471 in 2000, to an estimated 90,928 in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This represents a 22.1% increase in 10 years. Native residents are now greatly out numbered by new residents. A large percentage of new residents are retirees and middle aged professionals.

Attraction development has greatly increased in recent years contributing to the influx of tourists and tourism based services, and moving the economic base towards Recreation and Tourism, and creating new jobs in the service industry. Flathead County’s population increases by 40%, during the months of June through August.

We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, foster and maintain effective interpersonal relationships, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide leadership, executive oversight, and educational experiences for Flathead County 4-H Youth Development Program volunteers.
Provide leadership for volunteer recruitment, development, and support.
Provide leadership to enhance educational experiences for youth in the development of life and leadership skills.
Assess clientele and stakeholder needs for the purpose of developing programing to address identified needs.
Provide expanded educational opportunities for members and volunteers in traditional and non-traditional audiences.
Engage constituencies via direct interactions, collaborations, and partnerships with professional associations, committees, stakeholders, local governments, partner agencies, producer groups, etc.
Engage Extension specialists and peer field faculty to increase Extension’s success in affecting positive community impacts.
Deliver educational resources through Extension teaching, developing curriculum(a) or educational materials, and one-on-one and small group consultations.
Serve on Extension committees, state, regional, national, and other activities that support Extension, local communities, and MSU departments and colleges.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with relevant work experience in Public Administration, Nonprofit Administration, 4-H Youth Development or related fields
Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and provide professional development to volunteers.
Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership to Extension programming relating to volunteers and youth.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities.
Effective written communication skills
Experience helping diverse groups and individuals accomplish common goals.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of information technologies for dissemination of educational information, educational programming, and management

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:
Master’s degree in similarly related field as Bachelor’s Degree.
Demonstrated ability to work with volunteers to implement effective programs.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups.
Demonstrated ability to help groups find constructive solutions to controversial or contentious issues.
Grant writing experience

The Successful Candidate Will:
The successful candidate will possess excellent human relation skills; a high level of professionalism; the ability to work effectively with other staff members; evidence of good judgment; flexibility and innovativeness to respond to the changing needs of people in Flathead County; and will be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. The successful candidate will also have a familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information:
This position, if filled at the Master’s degree level, will be tenure-track. A successful candidate without a Master’s degree will be required to complete their Master’s degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination.

Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

Physical Demands:
Position requires frequent night and weekend work, extensive reading, frequent travel throughout the county, and occasional travel throughout the state of Montana. Position also requires using a variety of teaching methods and operating a variety of demonstration and educational equipment.
