Position Description

Position Overview

As part of MSU Extension (MSUE) and the Health and Nutrition Institute (HNI), this position provides leadership and expertise in food safety. This position will have statewide responsibilities and will collaborate across work teams, Institutes, and community groups.

In this position, you will identify, design, implement and evaluate programs that meet outreach needs related to food safety. Food safety programming encourages the use of safe food practices to reduce the risk of foodborne illness by teaching foodservice managers, workers, volunteers, childcare providers, and consumers about safe food and food preservation practices. You will prepare and present trainings in food safety, home food preservation, and emergency management at the state, regional and national levels.

Through your leadership, you will oversee implementation of programs such as Food Preservation, ServSafe, Cottage Food Law, Safe Food = Healthy Kids, Food Pantry Food Safety, Cooking for Crowds, and more. You will produce outreach materials that include messaging and content that is accessible and inclusive and is consistent with HNI messaging. Programming is delivered in-person, virtually, and through self-paced courses online.

Your work will include close collaboration with colleagues at MSU, as well as the diverse network of partner groups that include county health departments and food businesses. Working collaboratively, you will answer questions from the public related to food safety through online platforms (e.g., Ask an Expert), texting, and a telephone hotline. You will also present research at national conferences and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Through collaboration in research, engagement with the community, and dissemination of research through various methods, including in-person and multimedia programming and written communications, you will also develop education that reaches childcare providers to reduce foodborne illness in the children they care for, foodservice managers, workers and volunteers who protect their customers’ health and sell food products to the public.

Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the campus of MSU located in East Lansing, Michigan.
