Position Overview

As part of MSU Extension (MSUE) and the Health and Nutrition Institute (HNI), this position provides statewide leadership and support of health, food safety, and nutrition/physical activity Extension programs, serves on the MSUE Leadership Team, and leads institute priorities to improve the success of HNI’s educational programs within Michigan.


In this position, you will provide leadership to the institute’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) grant and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) which involves over 10 million dollars in funding annually to support educational programs, partnerships, and staffing. You will work with HNI staff to address emergent, and priority needs through cutting edge program delivery using a broad array of communication technology and delivery modes that matches the capacity of stakeholder and participant needs. Furthermore, you will work with staff to ascertain impact of programmatic efforts and will support their continued efforts to improve access of HNI resources to broad demographic groups based on culture, language, and locations that comprise Michigan.


In collaboration with the HNI Director, you will provide support for HNI staff and program management, such as new HNI staff hiring and mentoring, HNI work team support, identification of HNI needs and trends, internal and external communications, and partnership building with both internal and external partners. Work will be done in collaboration with MSUE District Directors, MSUE work teams, MSU faculty, external partners, and the HNI Institute Director.


The position will be based on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in food science, or related-health field of study. • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Extension or similar organization with an emphasis on nutrition education, food science, or community/public health.
