Description:
The Extension Gerontology Specialist, located within the Department of Health and Human Development, coordinates relevant and current information from a variety of sources to facilitate and deliver effective non-biased, researched-based educational programs that address the needs of an aging population, caregivers, families and professionals.The Extension Gerontology Specialist, located within the Department of Health and Human Development, coordinates relevant and current information from as variety of sources to facilitate and deliver effective non-biased, researched-based educational activities that address the needs of an aging population, caregivers, families and professionals working in the field. The Specialist develops appropriate Extension gerontology related educational programs and resources; assists in their delivery and evaluation across the state; provides training to Extension Agents, conducts research and publishes, including research that addresses identified needs and emerging issues; obtains and manages external funding; serves on university, state and national committees; and disseminates information to mass media on gerontology topics. The program design should be responsive to changing needs and policies at the state, regional and national levels. Programming should be designed to reach all Montanans including rural, vulnerable and at-risk populations. We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.This specialist is expected to:Develop research and Extension programming, secure extramural funding, and publish research results in appropriate refereed and peer reviewed journals and Extension publicationsDevelop, facilitate, or adapt audience appropriate dissemination or resources such as professional development or outreach materials for Extension Agents and other constituents throughout MontanaDevelop and maintain professional partnerships with Extension faculty, non-Extension faculty and stakeholders that advance the mission of ExtensionConduct and interpret research related to gerontologyContinue leadership and oversight of statewide Extension efforts in Kinship Navigator Support Groups and Caregiver Programming (currently Parenting a Second Time Around and Powerful Tools for Caregivers)Active participation in Department, College, Extension, and University service committees. Involvement in relevant aging community services and the professional activities at largeMaintain timely accountability through reporting to Extension, internal and external stakeholders (such as state agencies, non-profits and foundations), and funding partnersDocument outcomes, impacts and successes in Extension scholarshipTravel both within Montana and outside of the State will be required to support research, teaching and service expectationsTeach one (1) graduate or undergraduate course in the Department of Health and Human Development annuallyRequired Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & SkillsMasters degree with at least one degree in gerontology, human development or related area by the time of hire.Strong record of academic achievement.Ability to develop, adapt, implement and evaluate educational programs.Ability to develop scholarship in field of gerontology as indicated by external funding, publications and/or presentations.Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of information technologies for dissemination of educational information and educational programming.Effective communication with state and local partners, constituents and professional peers.Demonstrated knowledge and skills to work with diverse audiences.Preferred Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & SkillsPhD with at least one degree or certificate in gerontology, human development or related area by the time of hire (to be considered for tenure-track faculty appointment).Successful experience working with land-grant university Extension programs.Professional experience working with elders and their families.Experience establishing collaborative relationships with colleagues and community stakeholders.Evidence of effective teaching ability in university and/or community-based programs.Experience obtaining and managing external funding.The Successful Candidate WillPossess excellent human relation and written communication skills; be able to develop exemplary Extension, research and teaching programsBe able to work effectively with other faculty and staff membersHave evidence of good judgment; possess flexibility and innovativeness to respond to the changing needs of people in MontanaHave experience in working with rural and vulnerable populationsBe able to work harmoniously with youth and adults on an individual and group basis; and be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.Have a familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and have a commitment to the principles of diversity and to excellence in Extension programmingStay abreast of current academic research in the field of GerontologyHave an appreciation of diverse constituencies and add intellectual diversity to the departmentDedication to supporting and enhancing Montana State Universitys initiative for diversity, equity and inclusivenessPosition Special Requirements/Additional InformationWith a doctoral degree, this position is a twelve-month, tenure-track faculty position with the Health & Human Development Department.
