Description:
This position is based in Chinook, MTThe primary focus for the agent in this full-time position will be to provide leadership and educational programming in the disciplines of Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H/Youth Development. The Blaine County Extension Office is staffed by one other Extension Agent (Agriculture and Natural Resources and 4-H/Youth Development) and one full-time administrative assistant.COUNTY PROFILE: Blaine County is located in north central Montana, and the county borders Canada. Blaine County has an area of 4,500 square miles with an average of 1.7 persons per square mile. The county population is 7,000, with the largest population centers in Chinook, Harlem and Turner. Based on an agricultural economy, Blaine County also relies on oil, gas, tourism and education as primary sources of employment. Hunting, fishing, rodeo, and sports are popular forms of recreation. The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument is located along the southern border of the county.Bear Paw Battlefield National Park is located 15 miles south of Chinook and the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation lies in the eastern third of the county. Complete school systems are located in the communities of Chinook, Harlem, and Turner. Montana State University-Northern and the Northern Montana Medical Center are located in Havre, 21 miles west of Chinook. The Blaine County 4-H program has 120 youth members and 50 adult leaders in 6 organized clubs.The primary focus for the agent in this full-time position will be to provide leadership and educational programming in the disciplines of Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H/Youth Development. The Blaine County Extension Office is staffed by one other Extension Agent (Agriculture and Natural Resources and 4-H/Youth Development) and one full-time administrative assistant.We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.Duties and ResponsibilitiesPlan, implement, facilitate, and evaluate 4-H/youth development programs that include project related workshops, organization of county events, and volunteer leader recruitment and training.Provide leadership to enhance educational experiences for youth in traditional and non-traditional audiences in the development of life and leadership skills.Work collaboratively with peer agent to provide leadership, oversight, recruitment, and educational experiences for Blaine County 4-H/Youth Development Program youth and adult volunteers.Provide expanded educational opportunities (skills and knowledge) for youth in traditional and non-traditional audiences.Work in cooperation with the 4-H Council and its subcommittees, MSU Extension Agents, community boards, organizations, and individuals as needed.Plan, implement, facilitate, and evaluate an educational Family and Consumer Sciences program with emphases on nutrition and food safety, health and wellness, stress management, and healthy lifestyles.Cooperate with the Fort Belknap Reservation Extension Agents and Fort Belknap/Blaine County SNAP-Ed Extension Instructor to conduct family and consumer sciences educational programming.Involve local citizens and community organizations in identifying needs and priorities, targeting new audiences, and developing and implementing appropriate and responsive educational programming.Provide leadership in Extension within Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H/Youth Development in Blaine County in a manner that increases MSUs success in positively impacting Montanans, benefiting youth and adults, and increasing the capacities of communities.Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies.Comply with all Extension federal, state, university, and county reporting requirements.Engage constituencies via direct interactions, collaborations, and partnerships with professional associations, committees, stakeholders, local governments, and partner agencies.Develop professional partnerships with specialists, associate specialists, peer field faculty, and stakeholders that advance the mission of Extension and increase Extensions success in efficiently identifying and meeting the needs of Montanans.Assess clientele and stakeholder needs for the purpose of developing locally directed programming and resources and delivering effective educational experiences to diverse audiences.Deliver educational resources through Extension teaching, developing curriculum(a), educational materials, one-on-one consultations, and small group instruction.Maintain timely accountability through documenting and reporting outcomes, impacts, and successes in Extension scholarship to Extension, internal and external stakeholders, and funding partners.Serve on appropriate committees at local, state, regional, and national levels, and fulfill other activities that support Extension, local communities, and MSU departments and colleges.Participate in relevant state, regional, national, or international professional activities.Preparation for and facilitation of meetings for diverse audiences.Required Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & SkillsBachelors degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H/Youth Development or related field.Demonstrated ability to lead groups; assess community needs; and develop, organize, plan, teach, and evaluate effective Extension programs.Demonstrated ability to provide leadership for and work collaboratively and effectively with individuals, groups, and community organizations representing a wide variety of youth and adult audiences.Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities.Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of a variety of information technologies for dissemination of educational information, educational programming, and program management.Preferred Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & SkillsMasters degree.At least one degree (either Bachelors or Masters degree) in Family and Consumer Sciences or closely related field.Experience and/or training in the area of Family and Consumer Sciences.Experience in volunteer management.Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups and help them find constructive solutions to controversial or contentious issues.Ability to promote the advancement of diversity.The Successful Candidate WillThe successful candidate will possess excellent human relation skills; A successful candidate without a Masters degree will be required to complete their Masters degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination.Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Drivers license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance.
