Agronomy and Weed Management Area Advisor (Applied Research and Extension)Serving Merced, Stanislaus and San Joaquin CountiesPosition Overview Location Headquarters. Merced County, Merced, CaliforniaPurpose. The Agronomy and Weed Management Area Cooperative Extension Advisor will conduct a multi-county extension and applied research program that addresses grower and industry needs, including variety evaluation, soil, nutrient and irrigation management to optimize agronomic cropping systems and integrated weed management. Primary crops include forage and silage crops, alfalfa, small grains, grain corn, dry beans, and cotton.1. Serve and support the agronomic crops industries, developing expertise in forage and silage crops that would support the dairy cropping systems clientele. Covering these crops provides critical assistance for long-term dairy sustainability and important issues facing this industry such as water quality regulations on nitrogen and salts.2. Serve and support the cotton, grains, dry beans, and oil seeds acreage and industries.3. Serve in a critical role of providing information on how to manage weeds in annual cropping systems. The weed management program will have a specific focus on weed ecology and sustainable weed management in agronomic cropping systems, including but not limited to herbicide resistant weeds and managing weeds in herbicide resistant crops This is an exciting opportunity to have meaningful impacts in the communities of Merced, Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties and throughout California. Opportunities abound for research and extension partnerships that link consumers and resource professionals with relevant science-based information and promote effective problem solving. You will also join a team of highly motivated UCCE colleagues who are passionate about their work and are dedicated to making a difference within the communities and working landscapes of California. The potential for collaborative projects within the UC ANR system is nearly limitless.Counties of Responsibility. This position is focused on agronomy and weed management issues in Merced and Stanislaus Counties, plus weed management in San Joaquin County. There is opportunity to work collaboratively across counties. Reporting Relationship: The CE advisor serves under the administrative guidance of the University of California Cooperative Extension Merced County Director, with input from the UCCE Stanislaus and San Joaquin County Directors.Qualifications and Skills Required Required QualificationsEducation: A master's degree or other advanced degree in disciplines such as plant science, weed science, agronomy, pest management, crop production, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment. Additional Requirements: The CE advisor must possess or obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) within one year of hire.Skills RequiredTo be successful, Advisors require skills in the following: Technical Competence and ImpactThe candidate should understand key concepts to optimize agronomic cropping systems and be able to design and implement a program that leads to positive changes and impact within the community and beyond.CommunicationDemonstrated excellence in written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
