Job DescriptionThe University of Nevada, Reno, Extension is recruiting for a full-time, 12-month Lecturer, Extension Educator or Assistant Professor, Extension Educator for its Lyon County Nevada location in Yerington, NV. The primary role of the Extension Educator is to establish a non-formal (non-credit) community-based education program focused upon identified needs in community development, children, youth and families, horticulture/agriculture, natural resources, and, health and nutrition. This position provides oversight of the 4-H staff and program and serves as the local university liaison with county government. Duties of the position include assessing community needs, develops and implements relevant educational programming, and documents program outcomes and impacts. Additional roles and responsibilities include: 1) facilitating collaboration within the community; 2) providing subject matter expertise to colleagues in Cooperative Extension and/or the University of Nevada, Reno; 3) developing resources (grants, gifts, budget enhancements) as needed; 4) providing professional development to peers, collaborators, and self; 5) creating appropriate research, scholarly and/or creative works (peer-reviewed extension and journal publications, presentations at professional meetings, use of electronic media, etc.); 5) providing oversight and management of the Churchill County Extension Office and related resources; and 6) assuming professionalism with all internal and external audiences, ensuring proactive communication. The typical role statement for Extension Educators is 70% teaching, 25% scholarship, research and creativity, and 5% service (community, college, university, and professional societies). This position requires a commitment to work effectively with diverse cultural and community interests and to develop and maintain solid working relationships within the community.

Department InformationUniversity of Nevada, Reno Extension is a major unit of the University of Nevada, Reno, and resides in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources. Extension uses peer-reviewed research to find solutions to community-based issues and needs within six broad legislatively mandated areas: Agriculture; Children, Youth, and Families; Community Development; Health and Nutrition; Horticulture; and Natural Resources. The mission is to discover, develop and disseminate, preserve and use knowledge to strengthen the social, economic and environmental well-being of people and their communities. Cooperative Extension has offices in 16 of Nevadas 17 counties with programs that span very large urban centers with over two million residents to isolated ranching and farming communities of several hundred or fewer inhabitantsCounty ProfileLyon County, Nevada has 2,024 square miles. The county seat is Yerington. There are two incorporated cities in Lyon County, Fernley, and Yerington, as well as towns such as Dayton, Silver City, Silver Springs, Smith Valley CDP, and Stagecoach, to name a few of the many populated locations. Fernley is the largest with 19, 863 persons. Lyon County agriculture is diverse with alternative crops and traditional cattle and hay production. Almost 73 percent of the county is federal land, including 44 percent managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Major economic development projects such as the Tesla Gigafactory located in adjacent Storey County and the Nevada Cooper project in Southern Lyon County represent strategic economic development opportunities for this county and its local communities. The County features three state parks, Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area, Wilson Canyon and the Humbolt-Toiyabe Forest in South Lyon County which provide excellent outdoor opportunities for camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, and sight-seeing.

Minimum education level :
Required QualificationsLecturer, Extension Educator, non-tenure track - Compensation Grade 0(II):Masters degree in one of the following broad fields: Community Development, Youth and Family Studies, Child Development, Community Health, Rural Sociology, Agriculture, Natural Resource Management or other related degree programs.Assistant Professor, Extension Educator, tenure-track - Compensation Grade II:A Ph.D. degree in one of the following broad fields: Community Development, Youth and Family Studies, Child Development, Community Health, Rural Sociology, Agriculture, Natural Resource Management or other related degree programs.The successful candidate will be expected to:Work a flexible schedule, with periodic evening and weekend workPerform manual labor, lift heavy objects greater than 20 pounds, drive long distances and work in inclement weatherWork alone for extended periods and interact collegially with small and large teamsPeriodically travel throughout the state to assist with multi-county or statewide efforts related to subject matter expertise or attend area and state-wide Extension meetingsPreferred QualificationsAt least two years experience in organizational development in a community education settingExperience in Children, Youth, and Families programsExperience in collaboration with the county government in budgeting, program development, and evaluationExperience in developing community collaborations and partnershipsExperience in community education program developmentExperience in program evaluationExperience with community needs assessmentsExperience with fund development
