Description:
Wabaunsee County is a two-agent county located the heart of the Flint Hills. It is a convenient 25 miles from Manhattan and 33 miles from Topeka. Alma is the county seat and is located 3 miles south of Interstate 70 on Highway 99. Wabaunsee County has a population of 6,922. There are 630 farms with over 462,000 acres of cropland and 342,000 acres of pasture. There is considerable interest in continuing to grow a strong 4-H Youth Development program. Extension agents are community based faculty of Kansas State University who make a difference by connecting community needs with university resources. Agents are administratively responsible to the local extension director and the local extension board. This position will provide primary leadership for the development and implementation of research-based educational programming related to agriculture and natural resources. Programming will include but is not limited to: agronomic and livestock production, agricultural economics, management and public policy, horticultural production and management, natural resources conservation, and environmental stewardship.

QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: 1. Bachelor's degree. 2. Academic coursework and/or professional development and professional employment related to the position responsibilities. 3. Evidence of strong academic and/or professional performance as documented by college transcripts, acceptance into a graduate program or documented success in increasingly responsible professional positions. 4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups and through mass media. 5. Leadership skills as evidenced by working with individuals, groups and co-workers. 6. Access to a personal vehicle and the ability to obtain/maintain a valid drivers license. PREFERRED: 1. Master's degree. 2. Experience working with adults and youth from various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. 3. Commitment to personal professional development. 4. Ability to utilize electronic communication and computer applications to fulfill programming responsibilities. 5. Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision, balancing multiple projects. 6. Ability to design, promote, implement and evaluate educational programs. 7. Skills in group facilitation. 8. Knowledge of adult and youth teaching/learning processes. 9. Experience in seeking and administering external grant funding. OTHER: 1. Other Requirements:
SALARY, BENEFITS, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: 1. Salary commensurate with professional experience and available funding as negotiated by the regional extension director, the local extension board and the applicant. The base starting salary is $41,500 for a BS degree with no professional experience and $45,500 for a MS degree with no professional experience. 2. Extension agents are Kansas State University educators and have the Board of Regents retirement plan, health and life insurance and vacation and sick leave. Reimbursement for travel related to achieving program objectives. 4. New agents are provided approximately 15 days of new agent professional development on the K-State campus during the first six to nine months. These 15 days are spread out in four different weeks. In addition, new agents spend at least three weeks with a mentor agent during the first year.
