This is a 12-month, permanent status-accruing Residential Horticulture Extension Agent position to provide leadership, teaching, and management of residential horticulture extension programs including theteaching and management of the Flagler County Master Gardener program. Clientele for this position include residents, homeowners, retail nurseries, landscape product and service businesses, Master Gardeners, school-age youth, and municipal government employees.As the Agent, you will plan, implement, and evaluate programs with emphasis on the Master Gardener program, Florida Friendly Landscaping, water conservation and water quality, nutrient management, safe pesticide use, pest management, and other residential horticulture issues. You will be responsible for managing the Master Gardener volunteers for programdelivery and to maintain the demonstration gardens at the Flagler County Extension office.If you are the successful candidate, we expect you will: Have experience working with ornamental plants, landscapes, and turf. Have plant diagnostic and identification skills. Understand watershed science, water quality, and water quantity issues. Understand state and federal pesticide and fertilizer application licensing requirements. Be familiar with the local ornamental horticulture industry and the associated professionals within it. Develop relationships with industry groups, developers, homeowners, and Master Gardeners. Use and teach technology-enhanced and technology-based instruction and conduct educational demonstrations. Develop an advisory committee that will help provide direction for the program. Work with other agents as part of a team, collaborating on projects such as grants and events. Write articles, develop multi-media presentations, compose county fact sheets, and create posters and exhibits. Obtain extramural funding for program delivery and enhancement. Participate in 4-H Youth Development activities. Participate in professional organizations appropriate for this position. Develop educational programs that meet industry needs for continuing education.You will work closely with the Flagler County Extension Director and the Central District Extension Director and will assume other duties assigned by them. You will create an annual plan of work and report of accomplishment and submit required faculty reports.Minimum requirements:The successful candidate must have a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in horticulture, or a combination of a bachelors degree in a related field plus horticulture experience. If hired solely with a bachelors degree, we want you to continue to grow in your career. As such, we expect you to make at least 50% progress towards obtaining your masters degree within the first 6 years of employment.Skills in writing effectively and engaging in public speaking are necessary. You must have the ability to become certified as a trainer for relevant industry certifications. Examples of these include Pesticide Applicator, Certified Horticulture Professional, Worker Protection Standards,Green Industry Best Management Practices, and Certified Arborist.An Extension Agent is a UF/IFAS faculty member; implicit in this position is the need to sometimes work outside of normal business hours. Therefore, a flexible schedule that allows for irregular hours is necessary. Travel in and out of the county with overnight trips and occasional evening and weekend work will be required. You must be able to obtain a Floridadrivers license and a pesticide applicators license. Employment is contingent upon the results of a national background screening.Preferred qualifications:A masters degree and experience in horticulture, plant science, or soil and water science is preferred, as is experience in teaching, writing, and developing educational programs. We expect that you will have excellent organizational skills, good record-keeping techniques, and the ability to respond to clients in a timely and efficient manner.
