Description:
Provide leadership and management of the Maine Families parent education/home visitation program of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, serving families in Waldo County. Maine Families is a statewide network of community teams serving the needs of pregnant women and parents with newborns. The Parent Education Program Manager has responsibilities in management (60%) including fiscal management and supervising two Parenting Education Professionals, and direct service (40%). Parenting Education Professionals serve as home visitors who work with clients to build protective factors that serve as buffers to reduce risk to children and families. These protective factors include parental resilience, knowledge of child development and parenting skills, social connections, and social-emotional competence of children. Through the Maine Families Program, the Parenting Education Professional delivers the Parents as TeachersTM evidence-based model that is based upon respected research findings with numerous studies demonstrating the following positive outcomes: increased parent knowledge of development, early detection of developmental delays, increased school readiness and prevention of child abuse and neglect. This model is delivered in the homes of parents (or a mutually agreed upon location) who voluntarily enroll. This position works with families in the Waldo County towns as assigned.

Required: Minimum of Bachelors Degree in child development, early childhood education, social work, parent education or related field, five years experience delivering education programs to families with young children with a minimum of one-year paid experience working with children birth to age 6. Substantial supervisory experience. Demonstrated success working independently and as part of a team, taking responsibility for team leadership. Strong interpersonal skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Strong skills working collaboratively with other agencies and organizations. Demonstrated leadership abilities. Knowledge/experience with state contracts and/or grants. Demonstrated experience working delivering educational programs to diverse participants. Ability to communicate effectively using oral, written and electronic methods. Ability to engage parents in being their childs first teacher. Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and assess the needs of parents and young children. Ability to communicate parent education regarding development of positive parenting skills, knowledge of child development and strengthen parent-child relationships. Good listening skills and an understanding of the confidential nature of this work. Ability to keep accurate and complete electronic data/records of work with each family to meet the obligations of current grant. Ability to work as a team member as well as independently. Demonstrated good assessment and writing skills. Yearly renewal of Parents as TeachersTM & Maine Roads to Quality certificates. Ability to travel with personal vehicle (travel reimbursed at the current grant rate) usually requiring valid drivers license. Be efficient, organized, and self-directed and manage multiple tasks. Demonstrate computer skills including word processing in Microsoft Word and basic electronic mail skills. Ability to process personal correspondence. Ability to refer families by having up-to-date knowledge of other local agencies and organizations. Demonstrated experience working with and delivering educational programs to diverse participants Preferred: Masters Degree. Knowledge/experience with Parents as Teachers evidence-based model.
