The Golden Plains Area is a partnership between Kit Carson, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties. Extension agents and program associates from the five offices across the Area deliver diverse programming and work cooperatively with some of Colorado's most progressive agricultural producers, families and community related agencies. The Area's predominate feature is its High Plains location above the Ogallala Aquifer accommodating deep well, center pivot irrigated crop production. Agriculture serves as the economic base for the area. Livestock production is a major economic influence with numerous cow/calf and large confined animal feeding operations (beef and pork) located here. The Area also has significant acres of dry land crops and rangeland. The natural resources that support the agricultural industry also support plentiful outdoor wildlife and recreational activities. PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Extension Agent is a local representative of Colorado State University, serves as a member of an area team and works under the supervision of Golden Plains Area Extension Director. The individual will provide leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of Family and Consumer Science educational programs for adults and youth in the Golden Plains Area Counties. The individual will also work cooperatively with other Extension Agents, Specialists, University Faculty, researchers, and industry and community partners to develop and deliver quality educational programming and information to benefit Coloradans.Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting: 60%Develop, market, deliver, and evaluate non-credit educational programming and information delivery to the Golden Plains Area in response to locally identified needs in family and consumer sciences, youth and emerging enterprises to enhance current opportunities for families.Provide 4-H youth development leadership and general resource support, as part of the 4-H team, for family and consumer science, school enrichment and outreach programs for youth.Provide program and information delivery support to colleagues in area(s) of specified expertise as appropriate; this may take the form of delivering priority consumer or industry programming, representing CSUE on boards or in partnerships, or responding to atypical requests for information in specified area of expertise.Work cooperatively with Area and State 4-H agents to provide appropriate educational opportunities to 4-H /Youth project leaders and/or members to ensure integration of current best management practices.Effectively communicate and coordinate resources, research and programming with personnel/staff of Colorado State University and other colleges, agencies, universities and institutions to enhance program development, delivery and evaluation. Use technology and media resources to extend information and educational opportunities to Coloradoans.Provide leadership and assistance with other activities as assigned by Extension.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Initiate and Develop Relationships and Partnerships: 20%Develop relationships with the local community partners including agencies and organizations across all service providers to continually assess conditions and identify needs. Engage such diverse groups in the development of program direction and evaluation of program effectiveness.Work with advisory committees, community leaders, area agencies and non-profits to continually assess conditions and develop effective plans of work providing measurable program outcomes.Use entrepreneurial skills to find or generate external funding sources (grants, contracts, gifts, sponsorships, user fees, etc.) and practice cost recovery. Prepare and manage a significant non-appropriated budget of approximately $10,000 including support for cost recovery and revenue generation.Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Volunteer Recruitment, Development and Management: 20%Recruit, train and support volunteers to extend nutrition, food preservation and /or, food safety research-based information and/or programs to consumers. Work to recognize and retain their services over time.Provide leadership for adult and youth volunteer programs including volunteer recruitment, selection, orientation, education and training, motivation, evaluation, recognition, and support. Prepare volunteers to take on mid-manager, leadership, education, and information delivery roles in support of 4-H youth development programs.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.

Minimum education level :
Completed bachelors degree conferred prior to start of employment. Degree must be in family and consumer sciences, youth development, natural sciences, agriculture, animal science, education, agricultural education or a closely related field. A successful candidate without a completed masters will be required to complete a masters degree relevant to their Extension position within 5 years from the start of employment. Failure to do so will result in termination unless a compelling reason is accepted by the Director of Extension. Background, work experience, coursework, or degree that demonstrates expertise in family and consumer sciences, youth development, livestock production and/or natural resources.Demonstrated skill working with people as individuals, groups, and staff, and the ability to develop and maintain relationships with clients and other professionals and organizations to accomplish goals. Demonstrated leadership ability.Ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to affect change or obtain desired outcomes. Evidence of drive and initiative. Must be a self-starter.Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience. Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.Personal or professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree in family and consumer sciences, youth development, natural sciences, agriculture, animal science, education, agricultural education or a closely related field.Experience or coursework in agriculture, animal science, education, community development and/or facilitation.Experience and familiarity with mass media and electronic communications (TV, Internet, radio, newspapers, on-line education). Experience in identifying audience needs, developing programs and evaluating impacts of programs. Interest or experience in providing family and consumer science educational programs or information to youth and youth program leaders. Knowledge of and experience with methods of conflict resolution, facilitation and public issues education.Demonstrated ability to generate extramural funds (grants, contracts, and cost recovery efforts).
