This position is located in Helena, MTLocated in mid-western Montana, Lewis and Clark County is home to the Capital City of Montana and has a population of about 67,000. The majority of the populace lives in or near Helena, with the smaller communities of Augusta and Lincoln in the northern end of the county. Carroll College and the Helena College of the University of Montana offer local opportunities for advanced education. The leading source of employment is the State of Montana. In addition, Fort Harrison serves the military community with local Guard and Reserve units, and a Veterans Hospital. Surrounded by National Forest, Hauser Dam, Canyon Ferry Dam, and Lake Helena, Lewis & Clark County offers a multitude of opportunities for avid outdoor activities such as skiing, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, camping, and much more. Helenas location lends itself to easy travel access to Butte, Great Falls, Bozeman, and Missoula and is only 150 miles from Glacier National Park. Lewis & Clark County offers the opportunity to participate in both urban and rural programming, with a unique blend of traditional agricultural land and outdoor recreational havens. Helena itself is a unique blend of historical properties from its Gold Rush days of instant fortunes to the many recent community additions and ongoing development. In addition to this position, the Extension Office is staffed with a Family and Consumer Science Field Faculty, 4-H Youth Development Field Faculty, part-time grant funded 4-H Military Program Coordinator, SNAP-Ed coordinator, and an Administrative Assistant and is located on the Lewis & Clark County Fairgrounds.The scholarship of Extension work at MSU is defined as, The creation of partnerships, programs, and plans through Extension, or other community-based research, that leverage the knowledge and resources of the university and the public/private sector to enhance learning, discovery, and engagement; educate and engage citizens; strengthen communities; address locally identified issues and problems; apply and disseminate knowledge; and contribute to the public good. A complete description of Field Faculty Expectations for Extension Scholarship is available.Focus of this position is to plan, implement and evaluate Agriculture and Natural Resource educational programs serving all Lewis and Clark County clientele; Emphasizing traditional and emerging agriculture enterprises including: horticulture, agronomic and livestock enterprises; and crop, weed, pasture, nutrition and water management. The audiences for these emphases are commercial ranchers and farmers, small acreage producers, and residential clients. The successful candidate will provide leadership by working successfully with volunteers and clientele to identify and meet community needs in Lewis and Clark County. Other focus will include collaboration with peers in 4-H Youth Development or other Extension disciplines to assist MSU Extension in generating positive community impacts.We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.Duties and ResponsibilitiesPlan, implement and evaluate research based educational programming and information to affect positive Agriculture and Natural Resource focused community impacts .Strengthen the impact and scope of the Agriculture and Natural Resource programs in Lewis and Clark County.Provide program leadership by collaborating with Extension professionals to deliver locally identified programs in Lewis & Clark County and the surrounding area.Provide leadership to local Extension staff and stakeholder groups in determining priority Agriculture and Natural Resource needs.Conduct continual informal or formal needs assessments of Agriculture and Natural Resource needs in the county and region.Embrace a team approach to planning, developing and implementing the overall MSU Extension program in Lewis & Clark County.Practice professional development to continually improve expertise in delivering MSU Extension programs.Cooperate with partner agencies and other groups that support Agriculture and Natural Resources.Complete and submit reports, evaluations, and other materials as required by MSUE.Required Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & SkillsBachelors Degree in related field and/or relevant work experience in Agriculture or Natural Resources or related fieldDemonstrated experience to recruit, train, and provide professional development to volunteers.Effective written communication skillsExperience experience helping diverse groups and individuals accomplish common goalsDemonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of information technologies for dissemination of educational information, educational programming and managementPreferred Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & SkillsMasters degree in a related fieldMaster Gardener program experienceDemonstrated ability to work with volunteers to implement effective programsDemonstrated ability to facilitate groupsDemonstrated ability to help groups find constructive solutions to challenging issuesGrant writing experienceThe Successful Candidate WillExcellent human relation skillsA high level of professionalismThe ability to work effectively with other staff membersEvidence of good judgmentFlexibility and innovativeness in order to respond to the changing needs of people in Lewis & Clark CountyCommunicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.Ability to provide effective leadership to Extension programming.Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilitiesFamiliarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity.Position Special Requirements/Additional InformationThis position, if filled at the Masters degree level, will be tenure-track. A successful candidate without a Masters degree will be required to complete their Masters degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination.Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Drivers license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance.
