The Tri River Area (TRA) is a four-county partnership including Mesa, Delta, Montrose, and Ouray counties. This position is based in Montrose County Office. Mesa County has a population of approximately 150,000 with Grand Junction as the primary urban community. Grand Junction serves as a major trade and medical center for western Colorado and eastern Utah. The county office is in Grand Junction. Delta County has a population of approximately 30,000, and the county office is in Delta. Montrose County has a population of approximately 41,000, and the county office is located in Montrose. Ouray County has a population of approximately 4,100 and the county office is housed in the Montrose office. The area population is growing as people relocate for employment, retirement, and the desirability of the area as a place to live. To learn more about Colorado State University Extension, go to http://extension.colostate.edu/.PURPOSE OF POSITION: This position develops, markets and delivers non-credit educational programming in response to community needs. The individual in this position works as a member of the local county Extension team and as a local representative of Colorado State University. This individual works under the guidance and supervision of the Tri River Area Extension Director.The position will provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs in livestock, pasture, range crop, soil, and weed sciences in the Tri River Area. This will include work with conventional crops, specialty crops, and pastures. Programs must include attention to irrigation and farm efficiency through new and established technologies including pesticides, with an overall objective of agricultural profitability and sustainability. This position will also provide leadership and support for agricultural enterprises through professional assistance with marketing and development of business plans. The program will service a wide audience of agricultural entrepreneurs ranging from new farmers to owners and operators of maturing agricultural businesses. The individual will provide marketing and business development through one-on-one assistance as well as seminars and networking opportunities designed to enhance the economic viability of all Tri River Area agricultural enterprises. Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting: 75% Develop, implement, and evaluate non-credit educational programming and information delivery in response to identified needs in crop, soil, and weed sciences. This includes traditional agronomic practices and organic practices.Work with agriculture producers to implement best management practices in conventional and specialty crops. This may include research and demonstration studies on cooperating farms and at the CSU Research Centers in cooperation with the manager and researchers.Provide training and resources to agricultural producers, and assist with developing marketing plans.Be a conduit to a wide range of marketing resources via CSU, industry outlets, and specialty marketing networks and initiatives.Research what products are marketable and can be locally produced.Seek out and manage external funding, personnel, and in-kind resources to support programming efforts.Work effectively with mass media (TV, web, internet, radio, newspapers).Commit to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and accountability for diversity outcomes.Provide program and information delivery support to colleagues in area(s) of specified expertise as appropriate. Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Initiate and Develop Relationships and Partnerships: 25%Establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, other departments and agencies, and the general public that inspires loyalty, excellence, and integrity.Actively participate in one or more Extension work teams to provide expertise for program and information development, delivery and evaluation efforts for TRA.Support and build relationships with applicable agriculture and marketing groups, committees and organizations.Work with advisory committees, community leaders, area agencies and non-profits to continually assess conditions and develop effective plans of work providing measurable program outcomes. ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum education level :
REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Completed bachelors degree. One degree must have been conferred in agricultural sciences, agricultural marketing, business, economics, natural resources, Extension education or a closely related field. A successful candidate without a completed masters will be required to complete a masters degree relevant to their Extension position within 6 years from the start of employment. Failure to do so will result in termination unless a compelling reason is accepted by the Director of Extension. Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience. Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree in one of the fields above. Course work and professional experience documents a broad and significant understanding of production agriculture and agricultural marketing. It is important that the educational background include the behavioral sciences as well. Knowledge or ability to learn of livestock, irrigated crop production, dryland production, soil fertility, weed management, pastures, and plant identification. Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences, a commitment to include diverse voices in program prioritization and planning, and a commitment to develop and deliver both inclusive and targeted programming.Experience or knowledge of innovative agricultural practices such as agro tourism, specialty crops and specialty markets, value-added processing, product marketing, and other strategies that support profitability and sustainability.Demonstrated ability to work effectively with mass media (TV, web, internet, radio, newspapers).Experience creating, presenting and organizing educational conferences, seminars, and workshops.Ability to speak Spanish.
