The Extension Mental Specialist, located within the Department of Extension, coordinates relevant and current information from a variety of sources to facilitate and deliver effective non-biased, researched-based mental health promotion, and programming related to suicide prevention, stress and depression and substance abuse disorders.Founded in 1893 as a Land Grant University, Montana State University (MSU) is composed of eight academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. Currently, the University hosts an enrollment of over 16,000 students, including approximately 2,000 graduate students. MSU recognizes the importance of work -life integration and strives to be responsive to the needs of dual career couples.Duties and Responsibilities Coordinates relevant and current information from a variety of sources to facilitate and deliver effective non-biased, researched-based mental health prevention, mental health promotion, and programming related to suicide prevention, stress and depression and substance abuse disorders, in Montana. Develops appropriate Extension health-related educational programs and resources, assists in their delivery and evaluation throughout the state. Provides Extension Agent training Conducts research and publishes, including research that addresses identified needs and emergent issues. Obtain and manage external funding. Disseminates information to mass media related to mental health topics. Program design should be responsive to changing human needs and values in state, regional, and national mental health-related situations. Assists Montanans in evaluation options; programming across the state with a focus on community-based mental health-related issues facing rural, vulnerable, at-risk populations. Develop a research and extension program, secure extramural funding, and publish research results in appropriate refereed and peer reviewed journals and Extension publications. Conduct workshops, webinars and presentations to agents and other constituents throughout Montana Provide materials and education to Extension Agents, develops professional partnerships with field faculty, specialist, associate specialist, other faculty and stakeholders that advance the mission of Extension. Conduct and interpret research related to mental health education. Serve on university committees, state, regional, national and other activities that support Extension and communities. *Participate in relevant state, regional, national and international professional activities. Maintain timely accountability through reporting to Extension, internal and external stakeholders, and funding partners. Documenting outcomes, impacts and successes in Extension scholarship.Required Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills PhD with at least one degree in psychology, counseling, psychiatry, social work, human development and family studies, or related area by the time of hire Strong record of academic achievement Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, implement and evaluate educational programs. Demonstrated ability to develop scholarship in field of mental health as indicated by external funding, publications and/or presentations Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of information technologies for dissemination of educational information and educational programming Demonstrated knowledge and skills to work with diverse audiences Experience writing and managing external fundingPreferred Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Extension, outreach, or teaching experience Community-based research experience working with Native American populations and/or rural populations (youth and adults) as it relates to mental health. Direct service related to mental health.The Successful Candidate Will Possess excellent human relation and written communication skills; be able to develop exemplary Extension, research and teaching programs Be able to work effectively with other faculty and staff members Have evidence of good judgment; possess flexibility and innovativeness in order to respond to the changing needs of people in Montana Be able to work harmoniously with youth and adults on an individual and group basis; and be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. The successful candidate will also have a familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and have a commitment to the principles of diversity and to excellence in Extension programming.Position Special Requirements/Additional Information With a doctoral degree, this position is a twelve month, term faculty position with MSU Extension. Benefits include retirement plan (TIAA), coverage for health and life insurance, Social Security, Workers Compensation and Unemployment Compensation.This position is administratively responsible to the Extension Executive Director.Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Drivers License and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points).
