The Director of Communications has primary leadership responsibilities for all aspects of marketing, communications and public relations for Colorado State University Extension (CSUE). This individual will report to the VP for Engagement/Director of Extension and serve as a member of the Directors Administrative Council.Colorado State University is a land-grant institution with a three-part mission of teaching, research, and outreach. The campus is located in the city of Fort Collins, the county seat of Larimer County. Fort Collins is a progressive community of approximately 156,000 situated 65 miles north of Denver on Interstate 25. Located at an elevation of 5,000 feet, Fort Collins has a clear, dry climate and generally pleasant temperature throughout the year. The office for this position is in the State Extension Administration Office in the University Square building located at 1311 South College Avenue in Fort Collins. Extensions total annual budget of approximately $28 million supports approximately 325 extension specialists, agents, administrators, and staff. Through its county, state, and federal partnership Extension currently focuses its efforts in Nutrition, Food Safety, and Health; 4-H Youth Development; Community and Economic Development; Natural Resources; Cropping Systems; Energy; Environmental Horticulture; Family and Consumer Science; Food Systems; Livestock and Range. Working closely with local and state advisory groups to determine local program needs and direction, Extension draws on the resources of 13 different departments in five colleges to provide non-credit educational programs based on research-generated knowledge.

Additional Description, Instructions or Comments:
PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide leadership, guidance, direction and coordination in the administration of marketing, communications and public relations operations within CSU Extension activities in the State of Colorado. In collaboration with the Director of Information Technology, the Director of Communication provides oversight to and management of the Extension web activities and branding efforts statewide.This individual is the primary contact for Extension field and campus staff for information and questions about communication and marketing policies, procedures, and issues as well as university and Extension branding issues. This position reports directly to the VP for Engagement/Director of Extension.Marketing, Communication and Public Relations Oversight: 40%Develop broad strategy and vision for marketing and communication that tells Extensions story in alignment with CSUs overall brand, using traditional and emerging platforms, to both traditional audiences and those not familiar with Extension.Develop scale-appropriate and expedient marketing, communication and public relations strategies, i.e., create a coherent marketing, communication and public relations strategy that is state-wide and provides guidance for cost-effective and locally appropriate solutions to help county staff improve visibility in counties and regions.Provides leadership for Extension marketing efforts focusing on Extension programming, partnerships and impacts. Provides the VP for Engagement/Director of Extension with regular analysis of marketing, communication and public relations operations.Serves as liaison and point of contact for CSU Division of External Relations and county public relations offices on public relations issues.Engages and collaborates with CSU colleges and major units.Research, write and edit engaging content for multiple channels (website, magazine, newspaper, press releases, and social media).Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Leadership and Management: 30%Leads marketing and communications cooperation and coordination between the regional, area and county offices of CSU Extension.Serves as a point of contact between the University public relations departments in colleges and units, and CSU Extension.Works with and educates Extension supervisors and administrators on marketing, communication and public relations policies and procedures.Determines policies and direction for Extension marketing, communication and public relations functions for presentation to the VP for Engagement/Director of Extension.Provides leadership and oversight to Extension professional development efforts on marketing, communication and public relations for employees, including Extension Forum, New Staff Orientation (on-boarding), conferences, short courses, classes, and other professional development opportunities.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Collaboration: 30% Works with all Extension personnel to support communication, marketing and public relations operations in county and area programs.Serves as a resource to employees and managers in response to marketing, communications and public relations management questions and inquiries.Advises employees and managers in Extension on effective storytelling, marketing techniques, new technologies, and gives feedback on efforts to improve skills.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum education level :
REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Completed bachelors degree. At least one completed degree (bachelors or masters) in a communication related field - liberal arts, business or closely related field OR at least five (5) years demonstrated professional experience in journalism, public relations, communications management, marketing, public administration or closely related field.At least three (3) years of professional experience demonstrating significant level of leadership skills.At least three (3) years of researching, writing and editing experience in a professional setting in journalism, public relations, communications or marketing. Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Completed masters degree.Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a strategic vision for marketing, communication and public relations, using traditional and emerging platforms.Demonstrated vision and experience for using emerging platforms to reach and engage a broad array of audiences.Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.Demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity through inclusive design and language.Demonstrated skill working with people as individuals, groups and staff, specifically from a position of leadership.Ability to forge equitable partnerships with other professionals and organizations, internally and externally, to accomplish team goals as indicated by experience.Professional experience or knowledge of Extension and a land-grant university system.
