The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) is seeking applications for a full-time, 12-month tenure-track faculty position focused on rangeland ecology and management at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, housed in Elko, Nevada. The incumbent will conduct an integrated research, extension and outreach program that addresses critical issues related to rangeland livestock production in Nevada and its interactions with wildlife. The breadth and depth of the subject matter and issues requires a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative focus.Responsibilities: Provide statewide leadership in applied research, outreach, and community-based education across the aforementioned subject matter, and interact with appropriate academic and management focused colleagues in Nevada and the surrounding states. The incumbent's program will address known rangeland resource issues on Nevadas rangelands, which include, but are not necessarily limited to the following: Clarifying the respective effects of ungulates (livestock, wild equids, and wildlife) upon upland and riparian plant communities;Improving livestock distribution to achieve grazing and habitat management goals;Managing livestock grazing (cattle, sheep and/or goats) to improve fuels management, and/or reduce invasive annual grasses;Improving managements understanding about relationships among vegetation composition and structure, wildfire, livestock grazing, and sage-grouse, other sensitive species (e.g., Lahontan cutthroat trout), and/or other focal wildlife species (deer, elk, etc.).Required QualificationsA Ph.D. in rangeland ecology and management, wildlife management, or closely-related natural resource management field. The applicant must have sufficient coursework in rangeland ecology and management (broadly defined) and/or relevant work experience to have an excellent background in grazing management and livestock production issues on arid rangeland landscapes.This position requires to work alone for extended periods, but also interact collegially with diverse teams and to perform manual labor, establish field research plots, drive long distances, work outdoors in harsh conditions, and periodically work a flexible schedule.Preferred QualificationsA strong background in rangeland resource management in the Great Basin and/or broader Intermountain West region.Demonstrated teaching and/or community education and experience with applied field research related to subject matter discussed in this position description.Demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding.A publication and presentation record that demonstrates scholarly and user-oriented work, and effective communication skills.A strong understanding of the mission and goals of the Land Grant University System.Ability to work as a subject-matter expert on contentious issues.Ability/willingness to participate in collaborative planning efforts.Knowledge and awareness of the social, cultural, economic, and legal contexts of western land management.
