Additional Description, Instructions or Comments:
PURPOSE OF POSITION: This individual is a local representative of Colorado State University and member of a local team of Extension agents as well as a member of family and consumer science Extension agents around the state. This individual works under the supervision of La Plata County Extension Director.This position will provide education, leadership, guidance and direction for the family and consumer sciences programming in La Plata County for adults and youth in the area of nutrition, health, family financial resource management, food safety, food preservation and home/cottage food business development. This agent is expected to work cooperatively with the local community to keep abreast of priority needs and provide appropriate support, facilitation and linkages to university resources. The agent is also expected to contribute to and strengthen the overall Extension program offered in La Plata County and to help build new audiences. This individual will develop community relationships, partnerships, and volunteer opportunity for residents, county government and Extension. This position requires strong leadership skills and an ability to facilitate community groups, manage volunteers and deliver quality educational programs and services consistent with the priorities of La Plata County. The individual in this position must be able to work autonomously, work with both youth and adults, and be open to a flexible schedule, including evening events and overnight travel.Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting: 60% Facilitate delivery of non-credit educational programming to address community and multi-county needs; evaluate efforts and report educational outcomes.Develop and deliver valued programming; experience with media and web-based information delivery methods.Effectively communicate and coordinate resources, research and programming with personnel/staff of Colorado State University and other organizations.Engage with appropriate Extension work teams to provide expertise for program and information development, delivery and evaluation efforts statewide. Work with advisory committees, community leaders, area agencies and not for profits to continually assess conditions and develop effective plans of work providing measureable program outcomes.Use entrepreneurial skills to find or generate external funding sources (grants, contracts, gifts, sponsorships, user fees, etc.) to help support programming efforts.Participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate and required by the position.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Initiate and Develop Relationships and Partnerships: 30%Recognize and act upon opportunities to build relationships and connect community and university resources to achieve desired outcomes.Promote engagement with diverse audiences.Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences.Support and build relationships with groups or committees such as human service, health, economic and business development related organizations, restaurants, etc.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Volunteer Recruitment, Development and Management: 10% Provide leadership for active, ongoing, adult and youth volunteer development and engagement through volunteer recruitment, selection, orientation, education, training, motivation, evaluation, recognition and support.Utilize effective communications, including websites, social media and local media, to recruit volunteers and Master Food Safety Advisor volunteers to extend the reach of Extension programming to the community.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.

Minimum education level :
REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Completed bachelors degree. Degree must have been conferred in family and consumer sciences, food science and human nutrition, public health, food safety, financial resource management, human development, agriculture, youth development or closely related field. Course work and/or professional experience must provide a broad and significant understanding of family and consumer sciences. A successful candidate without a completed masters degree will be required to complete a masters degree relevant to this Extension position with five years from start of employment. Failure to do so may result in termination. Evidence of ability to deliver effective educational programs and communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing targeting nutrition, health, food safety, as well as family and community needs. Experience or course work shall provide a broad significant understanding of food safety and human health. Ability as demonstrated through application materials and experience. Leadership ability as demonstrated by professional experience and/or appointed/elected positions of responsibility.Demonstrate skill working with people as individuals, groups, and staff and the ability to develop and lead partnerships and collaborations.Evidence of drive and initiative.Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivery of educational programs. Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Completed masters degree in one of the areas required in bachelors degree.Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD and member of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics).Appreciation and understanding of rural communities and an interest in working with people in a rural environment to address critical issues.Experience working with non-profit agencies and the ability to form relationships and partnerships with these entities and knowledge of lower income clientele.Experience in needs identification, program development, and evaluation.Demonstrated experience/training in the recruitment, training, and management of volunteers.Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including contracting, donor development, grantsmanship, or cost recovery efforts.Experience or training in promoting, marketing, or creating public awareness of program/services among key community decision-makers.Professional experience with, or knowledge of, Extension and the land-grant university system.Ability to speak, write, and deliver educational programming in Spanish.
