Extension Educator Insect Diagnostician (Lincoln, NE)University of Nebraska-LincolnWe are seeking to fill an Insect Diagnostician position in the Department of Entomology, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Responsibilities include developing and delivering educational programs and resources as an active participant in one or more of Nebraska Extensions statewide issue teams. The Diagnostician will also provide state-wide, regional, and national leadership in developing rapid, innovative insect diagnostics. This could include machine learning or other technologies to provide basic diagnostics with automated reporting to state and national records. The Diagnostician will train extension personnel, UNL students, faculty, staff, and other professionals in the new insect diagnostic technologies; lead and innovate Nebraskas identification, surveillance, and mapping of invasive and threatening arthropod species, especially those of economic importance; and connect regionally to network on species of concern and engage Nebraskans and others in citizen science projects around invasive species topics.We have an excellent opportunity for a full-time faculty position located in Lincoln, Nebraska and serving Nebraska. We are seeking a self-directed individual able to work in a flexible environment. The focus of this position will be providing insect diagnostics as an essential component of Integrated Pest Management of Insects in Nebraska; supporting off-campus educators in their diagnostic needs, including developing rapid, innovative techniques and technologies; and providing regional and national leadership in invasive species detection and eradication. This person will teach and coordinate training programs regionally in a) insect diagnostics; b) invasive species detection and eradication; and c) 4-H insect collection. In addition, this educator will provide leadership in improving and developing technologies for rapid insect identification.Required Qualifications: Masters Degree required; one degree in Entomology or closely related field. Masters degree must be completed by start date. Successful experience teaching in a formal or informal setting. Demonstrated ability to communicate (i.e. publications, web media, presentations). Training in insect and arthropod systematics or identification.Preferred Qualifications: Specific job knowledge or course work in insect classification. Two or more years of experience in arthropod systematics or diagnostics. Experience in the use of arthropod identification methods and technologies. Knowledge and skills in microscopy and photography. Skills in writing and public speaking. Ability to work under stress. Experience in working with individuals, coworkers, and teams to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by college, career, and/or community activities. Outstanding leadership skills as demonstrated by roles in college, career, and/or community activities. Ability to utilize electronic and online technologies for educational program delivery. Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences and a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming. Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs, including grant writing and fund generation.
