The Tri River Area (TRA) is a four county partnership including Mesa, Delta, Montrose, and Ouray counties. This position is based in Mesa County. Mesa County has a population of approximately 148,513 with Grand Junction as the primary urban community. Grand Junction serves as a major trade and medical center for western Colorado and eastern Utah. The county office is in Grand Junction. Delta County has a population of approximately 29,279 and the county office is in Delta. Montrose County has a population of approximately 40,946 and the county office is located in Montrose. The area population is growing as people relocate for employment, retirement, and the desirability of the area as a place to live. This position will coordinate and manage the Tri River Area Colorado Master Gardener Program. This position will be responsible for coordinating and managing volunteers for that program. The individual will be responsible for promoting and maintaining the Research and Demonstrations Gardens including the Arboretum and Ute Learning Garden. This position will also work one day in the Montrose Extension office managing and providing oversight to the Master Gardeners there. This position will communicate with Extension staff on matters relevant to his/her responsibilities.

Additional Description, Instructions or Comments:
Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting: 50% Facilitate the Master Gardener Apprentice Training.Be responsible for training of the Ute Learning Garden Docents and volunteers, publicity of ULG to area teachers and other entities, coordination with partner agencies, scheduling of tours and docents/volunteers, and maintaining records of visits. Student visits of 600 or more per year is the desired goal.Provide educational support to local communities by coordinating master gardeners demonstrations and presentations.Be responsible for the maintenance of the Horticulture Library at all three offices and keep handout publications available and well organized with the help of volunteers.Be responsible for the maintenance of the Ute Learning Garden and the Arboretum.Coordinate with the Horticulture Agent on overseeing non-student hourly personnel.Reporting of monthly, quarterly and yearly contacts. Also encourages master gardeners to report.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Volunteer Recruitment, Development and Management: 35% Responsible for the coordination and management of the Tri River Area Master Gardener Program including managing volunteers.Promote the program throughout the four county area, recruiting, and coordination of training, education, mentoring, and overseeing in-office client contacts.Oversee the certification of Apprentice and CSU Extension TRA Master Gardeners.Encourage volunteer participation via personal phone calls, emails, and provide follow up and follow through with clear direction to all volunteers.Plan, schedule, and direct work activities of all volunteer personnel in the garden areas.Delegate responsibilities to master gardeners to accomplish the above tasks as appropriate and ensure master gardeners follow through with assigned tasks.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.Initiate and Develop Relationships and Partnerships: 15%Initiate and develop relationships with entities that are involved in the gardens such as BLM and the Uintah Ute Tribe with the Ute Learning and Ethnobotany Garden and other entities that can assist with other gardens and providing fact-based training to the master gardeners and the public.Be responsible for all non-commercial horticulture client inquiries, samples and associated records with the assistance of volunteers. Develop public programs to help assist with repeated client inquiries.Serve as back up for the Extension Horticulture Agent as appropriate.Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences.Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.

Minimum education level :
REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Completed bachelors degree. Degree must have been conferred in horticulture, biology, botany, agriculture or a closely related field. If degree is not earned in one of the preferred fields (listed), applicant must have at least 5 years of any combination of education, training and experience in the broad field of horticulture. One (1) year of volunteer management experience.Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience. Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Years of experience :
PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Master Gardener certification or similar and two (2) years experience in an educational role in horticulture, plant problem diagnosis or similar field.Professional experience with or knowledge of Extension and the land-grant university system.Ability to speak Spanish.Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including grant writing, fundraising, contracting, or cost recovery efforts.Garden or landscape maintenance experience such as weed control, spraying, planting, pruning and other general maintenance.
