POSITION PURPOSE: The Area Cooperative Extension (CE) advisor for vegetable production and irrigation will conduct a locally-based extension and applied research program with a broad focus on vegetable crops management in Stanislaus County, with additional emphasis on irrigation management in the three-county, North San Joaquin Valley region of Merced, Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties. Critical issues addressed by this position include challenges relating to water availability and water quality preservation, as well as pest management, fertilization practices, improving current production systems, exploring cropping alternatives, food safety and security, and economic competitiveness. Key clientele include growers, farm managers, pest control advisers, allied industries, commodity groups, irrigation districts, conservation and environmental groups, public agencies, and consumers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and implement effective UC ANR Cooperative Extension applied research and educational programs to address the identified priority needs of the clientele that are consistent with ANRs Strategic Vision and ANR initiatives Conduct and report regular comprehensive needs assessments to identify priority issues or problems relevant to the local clientele groups being served.Disseminate useful, science-based information to inform clientele, using extension methods that are responsive to clientele needs and appropriate for the audience and situation.Maintain and promote UC ANR CEs credibility and visibility by participating in professional organizations and collaborating with government agencies, commodity groups, allied industry groups, policy makers and other organizations by providing independent science-based information and leadership.Evaluate programs and report accomplishments, results, and potential or actual impacts to scientific and lay audiences through a variety of outreach methods. Develop collaborative teams with other UC ANR academics, including CE specialists, AES faculty, CE Advisors and/or others, to address priority issues for UC ANR.SALARY: Beginning salary will be in the Cooperative Extension Assistant Advisor Rank and commensurate with applicable experience and professional qualifications. Minimum education level :
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A minimum of an earned master's degree or other advanced degrees in disciplines such as plant science, agronomy, horticulture, irrigation, soil science or a closely related field is required by the appointment start date. Demonstrated excellence in the areas of applied agricultural research and extension is preferred. Experience in irrigation management, water use efficiency and/or water quality is highly desirable. The ability to build partnerships and to work with multidisciplinary teams to address production and environmental challenges is required. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are required. The CE advisor must possess or obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License prior to applying or supervising the application of any pesticide.
