Description:
This is a unique academic position within UC Davis that allows for intellectual growth; interactions with researchers, students, farmers, and other stakeholders; and development of impactful data drivensolutions for agricultural sustainability in California. The position provides specialized support for the research, teaching and outreach program of Russell Ranch, a long-term research facility for the study of sustainable agriculture and part of UC Davis Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI). The Academic Coordinator will work under the direction of the Russell Ranch Director to coordinate and manage research activities. Activities will include experimental design and conducting researchprojects at Russell Ranch; managing and supporting undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and visiting scientists; maintaining the long-term archive of crop and soil samples;designing and maintaining a long-term electronic database; writing reports and publications; supplying input into the planning of research, educational, and outreach programs; identifying anddeveloping collaborative relationships with various stakeholders; recruitment and training of researchers and undergraduate students; events, outreach and conducting tours of Russell Ranch;contributing to proposal writing, fundraising and strategic planning for Russell Ranch; marketing andlogistics for Russell Ranch food products; and maintaining website as well as monitoring and evaluation. The Academic Coordinator will stay apprised of the emerging issues and problems associated with sustainable agriculture in California and maintain technical competence in the Coordinators area(s) of specialization.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:I. Coordinator of Academic Programs (80%)1) Academic program planning and development responsibilities include: Planning and development of research agenda and decision-making structures Participate in day-to-day decisions about management, contact appropriate technical experts about short and long-term decisions regarding experimental design Coordinate multiple research projects involving different stakeholders and collaborators (includingfaculty and extension, farmers, industry, non-profits and students) and keep accessible records ofprojects Collaborate with ASIs Communications Coordinator to update website content and outreachmaterials Collaborate with Coordinators in other ASI programs, especially the Sustainable AgricultureResearch and Education Program, to align Russell Ranch research and outreach efforts with keythematic areas within the Institute and achieve synergies across programs.2) Maintain database of Russell Ranch long-term data Be responsible for overseeing input and quality control of data from research projects Maintain protocols for sampling, data collection and analyses for long-term data collection3) Analyze data from long-term plots and perform evaluation by monitoring key indicators Assist with data collection on long-term plots Maintain archive collections and records and supervise sub-sampling Design and implement research projects that support the long-term research goals of Russell Ranch4) Supervise and support research activities Train and supervise graduate and undergraduate employees and interns on lab and field research, data entry and analysis Coordinate employee field and safety trainings Provide guidance to researchers regarding data collection and ensure complementary data collection across projects5) Participate in writing reports and articles and providing outreach on current research projects and long-term research Provide intellectual effort and participate in publications, presentation of research at regional/national meetings Actively disseminate information (beyond the boundaries of the campus) through informal instruction, presentations, or other means stemming from the Specialist's research accomplishments6) Assessment of program and constituency needs: Plan, facilitate and follow-up on meetings with both internal and external stakeholders (faculty, industry, farmers, students, non-profits and others) to evaluate program development and constituency needs Initiate, organize and follow-up on small group, on-site meetings with key researchers, students and organizations on focused research topics Evaluate effectiveness and reach of Russell Ranch activities through reports on publications, field day evaluations, visits, website traffic7) Actively contribute to ASI team efforts to expand funding for RR programs Coordinate and assist with writing of RR proposals for extramural funding Oversee management of RR value-added products, including sale of food to campus organizations Provide support, strategic planning and network development for RR fundraising8) Liaise with outside organizations by coordinating meetings, research partnerships, workshops and other activities Maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various agricultural and food industry organizations, state and federal agencies and other external groups on issues related to Russell Ranch andsustainable agriculture Give tours to visitors, organize the annual Russell Ranch Field Day, and coordinate Russell Ranch participation in other campus events9) Other duties may include: Assist with managing calendars and organizing meetings for Russell Ranch staff Occasionally assist with field operations during peak periodsII. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)a. Attend conferences, workshops and meetings relevant to Russell Ranch and sustainable agriculture, and give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.b. Assist with preparation of research publications.III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10%)a. Participate in activities of committees within the ASI, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.b.
