The Vice President for Extension and Outreach at Iowa State University invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track Associate or Full Professor to serve as the Director of ISU Extension and Outreach Program to Communities and Economic Development (CED); the Associate Director of the Institute for Design Research and Outreach (IDRO); and the Director of Design Extension.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Program to Communities and Economic Development is the primary outreach arm of the College of Design. This unit empowers communities to shape their own futures through research, education, community engagement, economic development, community planning and design. The Community and Economic Development Program serves as an essential conduit between Iowas communities and the resources of Iowa State University through synergistic partnerships with private and public sectors for the betterment of Iowans.

This position serves at the pleasure of both the Vice President for Extension and Outreach and the Dean of the College of Design. This is a jointly appointed, funded, and supervised position with 80% of the appointment funded by ISU Extension and Outreach. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Extension and Outreach and the Dean of the College of Design. This position will carry minimum expectations in teaching to be negotiated yearly. This administrative appointment also carries a renewable term of five years.

Responsibilities include:
Serve as the director of ISU Extension and Outreach, Communities and Economic Development (CED) and the Associate Director of the Institute for Design Research and Outreach (IDRO). Provide direction for the development and implementation of College Extension and Outreach programs, budgetary, and management policies as a member of the College and University Extension and Outreach administrative teams and the 12-state North Central Regional CED directors. Collaborate with other ISU departments and units, Extension and Outreach program units, and 20 multi-county Extension Education regions to create and execute quality programs, particularly in the educational areas of community development, economic development, local government, community design, and community planning. Provide leadership for needs assessment, development, delivery, and evaluation of issue-based and interdisciplinary CED programs within the university and with outside partner agencies.

Foster an atmosphere encouraging collegial interactions across the College of Design and ISU Extension and Outreach, as well as promoting interdisciplinary research and teaching activities. Strategically administer and maximize the resources of IDRO and CED. Increase IDROs and CEDs national and international reputation by fostering and supporting quality research, teaching and outreach. Develop and manage entrepreneurial approaches to procure revenue through grants, contracts, gifts, and fees to support and expand ISU Extension and Outreach programs, including managing a multi-million dollar budget. Direct and facilitate use of educational and communication technologies and creative formats for reaching a variety of constituents. Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate a diverse campus and field staff funded from base budgets and revenue generation.

Assist the College of Design chairs in providing oversight to faculty with Extension appointments. Provide input to the College of Design and its departments on the promotion and tenure of Extension faculty. Lead and coordinate distance education efforts in the College of Design and serve on Iowa State Universitys Associate Deans Distance Education Committee. Serve on College of Design Councils and Committees as stipulated by College of Design governance. Provide holistic leadership for the engaged scholarship of the greater university community through ISU Extension and Outreach. Contribute to the academic success of the College as a faculty member by supporting graduate students, conducting research, guest lecturing, and producing scholarly products as appropriate for Extension and Outreach. Accomplish other duties as assigned by the College Dean and/or Vice President for Extension and Outreach.

Minimum education level :
- Eligible for tenure as an associate or full professor in the College of Design
- Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in a discipline in the College of Design or a closely related field
